  A little of both. For my PhD I’m expected to create new ideas. For my work I’m given tasks like events to attend and project deadlines.

  For the new ideas, my supervisors give me feedback before I spend a bunch of time on an idea that won’t work.

I will get given tasks based on what needs to be done to tick all the boxes that ESA require from us to prove that our instruments all work properly.
