The typical routes to become an engineer are to study as an apprentice or to go to university. It takes at least 3 years, but you may want to do a master’ and that is two more years.

It depends on the country where you study. You need an engineer university degree 3 to 4 years depending on the country, then you can do a master’s degree or even a PhD.
A master’s is a 1 to 2 years program specialized in a certain topic that includes a short research thesis, a PhD is the highest academic qualification you can get and it is basically a very detailed research on a topic for about three years. In some companies you can do a PhD as part of your job which in my opinion is a great wayt to do if if you are interested in.

I did a 4 year Master of Engineering degree. Some people like to take a year out to work in industry during their studies to help further their understanding and their careers. On average, to get a masters degree in engineering I would day it takes between 4 and 6 years. To get a bachelors degree it may take 3 or 4 years.
