There are about 1000 operational satellites in orbit at the moment, so one’s that are actually working right now.

There are a lot of dead satellites that do not work anymore, which are then classed as space debris.

Space debris also covers rocks and parts of rockets that have been launched. There are about 30,000 pieces of space debris that orbit the Earth, they range from tennis ball size upwards. Every single one is tracked, to make sure it does not hit one of the 1000 operational satellites!
