My Work

I work building artificial heart valves (they control blood in the heart). When someone has a faulty heart valve, they’re not getting enough blood to the body. That makes them faint or get out of breath very quickly. Sometimes, they can’t even walk up the stairs. If the valve isn’t fixed, the person can die from these problems.
Giving a sick patient an artificial heart valve can save their life. I do a lot of research in designing a valve so it can make someone better. I use computers to draw the valves and test valves in a laboratory. I can also use 3D printing to build them.

My Typical Day: A typical day will include teaching, supervising students, computer modelling and lots of coffee and chocolate.

What I'd do with the money
I would use it to buy working models of the heart for school visits and exhibitions.

With the money I can build working models of the heart using 3D printing. It will include a pump and working heart valves to show how the blood goes around the body. Students can have a go at making the heart beat faster or slower as well as see what happens when a valve is broken.
