I studied Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University. I am currently on an operations future leadership program. This means I have the unique opportunity to work in three different jobs over two years, which will help me understand how the company works and identify which area of operations I would like to work in after I have finished the graduate scheme. I am originally from a town called Barrow-in-Furness, which is near the lake district, and I now live with my girlfriend in Newcastle. I am a very active person, who enjoys playing football (I support Manchester United) and exploring new places. My favourite food is pizza, and my favourite takeaway is Domino’s!

My Work
I am currently on an operations future leadership graduate scheme. I am a chemical engineer and I improve the safety, efficiency or the capacity of manufacturing plants.

I have just completed my first 8 month rotation on the graduate scheme. I worked on a project to increase the capacity of a chemical plant that manufactures catalysts. A catalyst increases the rate of a chemical reaction without undergoing any permanent change. This plant makes a catalyst that speeds up the conversion of methanol gas into formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is used to make glues and resins. Ikea is an example of a company that uses a lot of these glues and resins to make furniture.
I worked to improve the health and safety of this plant by participating in a number of health and safety studies. The plant is located in Sweden, and I had the opportunity to travel there to go and see it. I also helped to describe the changes that are needed in the process to increase the capacity of the plant.

My Typical Day: I get to work to for 8am and start my day by having a coffee, whilst checking my emails. My schedule will depend on what part of the project I am working on. I typically attend team meetings to discuss our project, carry out research on my laptop and create process engineering documents. Process engineering documents can be calculations, descriptions of the plant or reports. I like to go running at lunch time or talk with my friends. I normally leave work at around 4:30 pm. I like to unwind by playing football, watching TV or planning my next holiday.
