I operate as a one-person company with all the work I don’t like sub contracted and doing the design and control myself. We make carriers fitting to the towballs of cars and vans. It uses my own patent mount and has parts mostly made in UK with investment castings coming from China.
I stopped working for big corporates 25 years ago by which time I had been IT director of part of BT and run helicopters and designed boats for the Police in London. I started engineering work designing tanks then moved on to development of cars (from police cars to armoured vehicles for the government ministers) for the police in London
For the last 25 years I have been self employed doing consultancy and working for myself. I have done everything from design of extranet systems for a multi-country engineering company to analysis of military engineering operations on behalf of a bank.

My Typical Day: Design for new products - answer customers and manage current work

The most interesting part of my day is the design and construction of new products. However with a full range of products already in production this is driven more by enthusiasm than necessity.
Every day I have to answer in response to questions and requests from customers and contractors,. The majority of queries are simple and actually answered on the website!
I use a core group of contractors and decided long ago that I would only work with people I got on well with! The contractors all hold definitive sets of drawings my parts which makes reordering very simple.
