My Work
At the moment I am still studying different topics of engineering! A major project I have been working on this year involves designing and making a minaiture railway vehicle (a mini train).

The subject that I am studying is “Mechanical Engineering” – this is a very big subject and I get to learn about lots of different topics. One common thing is that mechanical engineering involves lots of problem solving.
This year, I have been working on The University of Huddersfield’s IMechE Railway Challenge team, where we work to design and make a miniature railway locomotive (a mini train) and we enter a competition against other teams.
For a big project I worked on last year, I researched 3D Printing methods, and I 3D printed lots of different sample materials which I then tested to see how strong they were before they broke.
As part of my degree I took an undergraduate placement year at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Lincoln, where they make small industrial gas turbines for power generation purposes.
Before going to University I studied A-Levels in Engineering, Maths, and Product Design… before A-Levels I had never really considered Engineering.

My Typical Day: Usually I get up early in the morning to go to the gym. Then I have breakfast and get to University for around 9.30am. Usually I have a few hours of classes in the day, but I spend the rest of my time working on the computer running simulations, or doing practical work to make things in the lab.

In my spare time, I run a 3D Printing Society at my University where I work with other students to help people understand how 3D Printing works and give access to 3D printers that they can use and practice with. This year we have had a lot of fun with this and made lots of cool things like christmas-tree decorations and “baby yoda” ornaments. We also do lots of community work and have been working on making 3D maps to help people who have visual impairments understand their surroundings.
