About Me
26 year old engineer living near Bristol. I like motorbiking, food and games.

My Work
I design products that allow us to measure very small distances. These are used in the production of phones, TV screens, and in robot movement.

I am a mechanical design engineer for optical encoders at Renishaw.
I design new products and work on the assembly jigs and fixtures that create and test products throughout the assembly line.
Typically I would be working ether in an office on the computer, in the production cell running tests, and assembling jigs or perhaps you’d find me in the workshop manufacturing a small item. There’s a good variety to my work, which I like. At the moment I am working from home (like the majority of the population). I am working at my desk, producing new design concepts on my computer and writing documentation for production rigs I have developed.
Below is the site where I work at.

My Typical Day: I get to work at 7am, I might have some lab tests to complete or some designs to finalise before a few meetings. I have lunch with friends, we often go for a walk around the site as it is set in the countryside with lots of land. In the afternoon I might analyse some data or make a presentation of some new designs.

The first thing I do in the morning is check my emails and reply to any queries. These may be questions on jigs, machine shop asking about drawings for parts I would like manufactured or external companies that I may have contacted about items for my designs.
Most of my job is coming up with solutions to problems by designing mechanical assemblies. These assemblies may be to help produce items in manufacturing, to test new concepts, or parts of products that Renishaw sells.
Typically design of new products is done by:
- Sketch ideas on paper
- Model concepts in 3D using CAD (Computer Aided Design software)
- Review concepts with others and perhaps develop 1-2 designs further
- Protoype developed ideas with 3D printers or perhaps in metal with the help of the machine shop
- Test my concepts, refine one further into the final design.
I often talk to a variety of other engineers who work on software or electronics and scientists or specialists in physics, chemistry or ergonomics.
