I assist on projects that find methods protect the Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) and Substations that ensures electric and bi-mode trains can run safely. For example, if a tree falls onto the Overhead Line and creates a short-circuit, we need to make sure that the fault can be made as safe and as fast-clearing as possible so that the train timetables are not disrupted.
As well as this, I have taken part on different projects such as creating an innovation for industry using a novel software. Sometimes I will even go on site visits in order to see how Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) are completed and help out with site surveys. The reason why I have gone under several placements is to see what each team does, assist on their projects and eventually find a discipline to go into for the rest of my career.

I get into the office for 09:00 and then see what my tasks are for the day, or continue with a task from the previous day. As there is a lot of project work, I am doing so many different things; each day is a little bit different!
At the moment, I am completing work for three different projects. This involved working with IP and VLAN Addresses for different sites, checking that formulae have been performed correctly, creating a MS Excel template to perform and present complex calculations in.
On a non-typical day, I will sometimes be required to go to a rail site to complete site surveys, substation technical services and practicals for training courses; this is all very rare, however, but it’s very interesting to see both sides of the industry.
Not every Engineering job requires you to be on a site and are mostly office based like mine – so if you’re not the kind of person who would enjoy site work, don’t worry! There are so many options out there that you will find the perfect working environment for you.
