The main problem we have is that when the antennas are designed in CAD, they are made unrealistically and not the machining standards. So when we come to actually assembling them, we see all the problems that occur in the realistic world. We overcome them by having meetings and sitting together and understanding the problem and putting our brains together from all points of view to fix it.

One of the problems we have is trying to create experiments that can predict how an implant would behave in all people. All of us are different at all sorts of different levels. We are different heights, shapes, weights; we move differently; our bones might be stiffer; we might be allergic to some types of material… It’s very difficult! So we develop experiments that represent an ‘average’ person – based on lots of information gathered (medical imaging, clinical studies) and then get more complicated from there!

I work as part of a very large team that involves engineers, biologists, physicists, doctors, industry partners and people who work for the government. Sometimes it can be very frustrating when everybody has their own opinion about how we should solve a problem. However, we get around this by allowing everyone to voice their opinion, and then we try to answer the science questions and see who’s solution will work best. This can sometimes take weeks or months though, which is really frustrating.

As a design engineer it is always difficult to come up with a new idea that nobody else has thought of. Being creative helps!
Then it is difficult to come up with a practical design that will make the idea happen.
Sometimes it is difficult understanding what a client wants you to design, often they don’t really know themselves! I overcome this by writing a product specification, so that they know what they will be getting. This gives them a chance to tell you if you have misunderstood. -

Eventhough I’m a Telecommunications Engineer by training, I’ve moved into technical project management and my day-day sits between the engineering and management teams. More than engineering problems, one of the difficult things I quite often have to deal with is uncompromising, inconsiderate attitudes of people which can affect the progress of the whole team. In those situations it is important to keep a level head – make sure the less assertive people do not feel intimidated and at the same time get the domineering ones to yield a bit without feeling offended. Not something we are taught at school/university but its quite important to maintain good relationships with people you work with and to know when to be assertive and when not to.

One challenge I have is the way I communicate complicated technical things with lots of different people. I work with many different teams, and we’re all experts in a different area. This can make it difficult, because we don’t always understand what the others are working on. I have to find ways to make the communication easier. I quite enjoy this though, getting creative with diagrams and drawings! It’s very satisfying when you help someone understand something new, sometimes very senior managers at the company. Maybe this is already something you do for your friends at school when there’s subjects you understand better than they do?
Another challenge is finding answers to things you don’t know much about – sometimes it can take a long time! You learn to find inventive ways to discover answers, often by searching for an expert who can help you out.
