I really like solving problems and engineering gives me a good opportunity to do that. I also really like doing experiments and that is why I decided to become a research engineer,

I love problem solving, trying things out and seeing how things work. That pretty much sums up being an engineer!

I studied physics at university and I really loved learning about what people had found out, but didn’t want to go into research myself.
I did really enjoy problem solving and turning ideas into real things, which is what engineering is all about. The projects I worked on all make physics research possible, something that I think is really important.

I actually wanted to be a doctor, but I missed one of my A-level exams. I swapped to Medical Engineering as it allowed me to combine engineering and medicine in one course. I have always been fascinated by how the body works, and how technology can be used to enhance the body.

I was lucky that from a young age I traveled on aeroplanes, I was fascinated by how this large lump of metal could fly through the sky, and I knew that this was something that I’d love to work with.

Engineering seemed a good way to combine my interest in sciences with my interest in tackling society’s big challenges (such as climate change, healthcare, food supplies). Engineering skills are always in demand (even if you don’t stay an engineer forever) so it seemed like it would be good choice for career opportunities too.
