I found out about medical engineering when I was in my third year of University, I was kind of gutted I hadn’t heard of it before because it is so cool.
We design things that doctors use to help people get better.
This can be scanners for diagnosis such as MRI machines.
It can new ways of delivering medicines – such as creams for burns.
It can be tools people use such as wheel chairs.
And I work on making new bones, so it can be things that go in the body like pacemakers.
I think it was probably through my Dad when he started working in the automotive industry in the 1980’s.
My parents always bought me what I would consider to be engineering / educational toys for example mechano, lego, kenex. So I feel like I was aware of engineering and I am sure I talked about it with my parents whilst building with these type construction toys.
I found out about engineering through my dad because he was a petroleum engineer. I found out about electrical & electronic engineering when I was in secondary school after I had had a look at a few different branches of engineering.
A bit by accident! I loved science and maths, but after studying physics for a while I found most enjoyment in seeing what I could do with it to improve things for people. I ended up moving towards engineering :).
