• Question: What does engineering mean to you?

      Hi Cryslaliser, Engineering is my world, at work and at home. I like making/inventing stuff – making something from nothing by applying simple maths and physics principles. At home I usually make stuff to make my life a bit easier: e.g. carbon fibre laptop stand and rubber iphone charger. At work is the same but on a bigger scale and a bit more complex. Overall you get this great feeling that you contirbutes to something great – in my case to a flying aeroplane.

      Hi Cryslaliser,

      For me Engineering is all about taking those theories, Law’s of Physics and Mathematical equations and then turning them into a real world product that you can touch and feel.

      Everything that Engineer’s do is about bridging that gap and making science work in the real world and seeing thing’s come to life is what makes it so exciting for me.

      Just look around you and you’ll realise just how many products have Engineering behind them. For example, the computer you’re working on? An Engineer probably analysed the cooling system to make sure it wouldn’t over heat and melt. The building you’re in? An Engineer will have designed it to ensure it wouldn’t fall down under it’s own weight. The Car or Bus you travel to school in? An engineer analysed that to make sure all the parts would fit and move together properly. Engineering really is everywhere 🙂

      It’s about seeing yourself as an Applied Scientist.

      An engineer is someone who creates/makes something new by applying known scientific principles and technologies. That may result in a totally new product or design, or it may be to make a big improvement on an existing design.

      Wow this is a difficult one – its so hard to say because there is so many types of engineering! From Chemical Engineering to Mechanical…

      I guess the one thing that remains the same throughout the different fields, is that these people all share a goal to improve things, improve “quality of life”. Not every design may be “ground breaking”, but it may just make your day-to-day life a bit easier! 🙂
