Hey! I actually wanted to be a doctor (surgeon in particular) but I was not good at chemistry and that was one of the requirements to get into Medical College. However I was always good at Maths and Physics thanks to great teachers I had. My dad was also a car mechanic so there were a lot of different tools around the house to play with. Later in my life it just felt natural to go the Engineering route. Because Engineering is a real application of those two subjects (Maths and Physics)! I was always passionate of how things work and I like to get my hands dirty so it seemed a perfect match for me. And an apprenticeship is actually allowing me to do both in the same time – learning about engineering at University and applying it at work – acting like a real engineer – making things (in my particular example – making aeroplanes fly safely).

      Hello!

I always had a passion for plate tectonics (earthquakes/volcanoes) and therefore absolutely loved geography, learning about the natural world. But at the same time, I used to escape to my own little world whilst in D&T!

It only clicked to me in year 12 when in a Geography lesson, I came across a quote from Susan Hough at the USGS, “Earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do”. And from this point, I wanted to work in the built environment sector. The more I looked into disaster management the more I wanted to become an engineer!

I did originally want to be a civil engineer, but because I didn’t study maths and physics at A level I couldn’t do it at university… Which is how I came across this opportunity of being an apprentice and why I am here today! 😛

      Hi Kim,

I decided I wanted to be an Engineer when I was about 15 I loved machines of all kinds like planes, cars and bikes, but I also really liked doing Maths and Physics at school. I heard the boss of an F1 Team say that to work for them you needed a good Mechanical Engineering degree, so I said to myself that’s what I’m going to do.

I was actually all ready to go to university full time before I came across an advert for my apprenticeship. I realised that I could get my degree with all my fees paid, get loads of work experience and come out with a job at the end. To top all that off it was with a top class company, Rolls-Royce. So for me it was a no brainer and I’ve never looked back since. I love my job and every thing about it!

      Huw 🙂

My love of fast, powerful cars and the fact that they required engineering to make them fuelled my interest in becoming an engineer.
