Probably when I led the team that designed and engineered the doors for the latest Range Rover.
The doors are large because the car is large, and they are made of aluminium for lightweight. The problem is that aluminium is much more difficult to use to make doors than steel is, so there were a lot of technical challenges along the way.
The budget for that project was in the tens of millions of pounds and was therefore also biggest engineering project by cost that I’ve ever had to manage.
I’m not at a stage in my career when I’m leading projects yet but I have been involved and worked directly for our latest engine, the Trent XWB. It’s the biggest engine we’ve ever built and the fan at the front is over 3m tip to tip. We’ve sold over 1500 engines each of which is worth around £30 Million. It’s the largest and most successful project in the history of our company and I was very proud to be involved.
As I’m still on my first project I only have the choice of one haha! This is a reasonably small-scale project, but still priced at £8 million! However, the next project that I am going to work on in a few weeks is a retirement village with a working value of £31.8 million – So I guess it’s reasonably large scale for my 2nd ever site! 😛
So far, I think the biggest project I completed was at University – designing, analysing and building a UAV model aircraft. It took 8 months of research, loads fo calculations, testing, analysisng results, changing the desing, building protoypes, doing test flight + on top of all this – filling paperwork! but I think it was the best project I have worked on so far! the most interesting and rewarding – it was great to witness all the hard work taking off for the first time 🙂
Did not lead in the project but led the training element of all the railway staff working on the Italian ANSALDO ‘Manchester South Capacity Improvement Program’ (MSCIP) and the Siemens projects of Shrewsbury to Crewe (SYC), Reading Train Care Depot (RTCD) and Great Northern Great Eastern (GNGE) resignalling projects. All big projects.
