Question: why did you choose to be a civil engineer?

To be honest, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I was in school. I wanted to join the RAF from a young age but I seemed to grow out of the idea as I got a bit older.

The only thing I did know, is that I enjoyed the subjects I did. I was absolutely in love with geography – learning about the natural world and its processes, but I also liked the problem-solving aspect of chemistry and the creative side to product design. Unfortunately for me, these aren’t subjects that typically tie together academically.

In year 12 I was taken on a trip to Oxford University. I chose to sit in an engineering lecture – I had no interest in the other subjects offered and knew that engineering was linked to the Technology side of Science. Soon I was also to learn that Geography and Design were both very much included. The more I looked into it, the more I realised I had an interest in the Built Environment and so I decided that I wanted to do Civil Engineering.

My interest in Civil Engineering along with my passion for Geography has made me realise that I would absolutely love to work in disaster management – building structures that withstand natural disasters 😀
