I am from Madrid, Spain but I have been living in London for more than 7 years now, so Brixton is my home, where I live with my boyfriend.
I love spending my spare time cooking for my friends or exploring London. I love discovering new secret places, even if it takes me 3 trains to get to them. My favourite a disused war bunkers! I love taking friends a family on mini London tours, to show them the least touristy stuff.
When I have time, I love going to gigs, especially the ones in small venues.

My Work
I design components for artificial legs

As a materials engineer and product designer, I make components for artificial legs for people that unfortunately have lost their limb due to illness or an accident.
I am specialised in very soft materials that sit next to the skin, so they have to be safe to use every day. My favourite material to work with is silicone, which is very similar to what is used in shoe insoles. I also like polyurethanes, as they can be foamy and it is the same material used to cushion your sneakers or to make your comfy mattress.
I also do design the components on my computer and then use 3D printers to try them on.
I work daily with amputees that try what I design to see if I what I have design works and if not keep improving it.

My Typical Day: I spend my time designing and building things in a lab

My typical day starts with catching up with emails that normally come from my patients (the amputees) to find out how are they getting on with the latest prototype that I made. If the comments are not so good, I go straight on to my CAD software to redesign the part and 3D print it straight-away, so I can send it to them as soon as I can.
When I have a little bit of spare time, I spend time doing research of latest technology or thinking how can I use an idea that I just came across.
I also support the factory where all this prosthetics are made, when something goes wrong or a machine breaks down.

What I'd do with the money
I would like to organise a workshop to teach Materials Engineering / Science via Baking

I love baking and cooking and not long ago I realised that I lot of what I do at work is very similar to baking. How can you turn sugar into something chewy or something really hard? How can I make a structure light and strong applying the same principles that we use to make sponge cake?
Materials engineering doesn’t have to be dull or boring. Materials are all around us and they are far easier to understand if we think about cooking or baking.
I would love to organise a workshop where we could put in practice all of this and spread the love for Materials 🙂
