I think being an engineer is great for your social life! Our research group is like a big family. There are about 25 of us and we regularly eat lunch together, go out to restaurants / do activities together, and we also get to go away on trips together quite often too (to visit other universities, companies, or to present our work at conferences). We are all quite sporty so we often play badminton, squash and go rock climbing together too. Last week we went bowling together, I came 2nd 🙂
It does affect my life in a good way. All my friends ask me questions regarding science and technology all the time.
My boyfriend also really likes science so we watch a lot of documentaries about a lot of different topics.
It is always a great topic of conversation that is not the usual weather or politics.
Also, engineering is great as a community. You get to meet a lot of really interesting people.
Not so far! and I hope it won’t. Having a social life is a very important part to keep yourself sane! I enjoy having a social break almost everyday (for tea or coffee) just to catch up with friends that work in the same place as me.
Hey Calebjr03,
I thought I’d jump on this one too! I have a family (married and have two young children), and so I didn’t really have much of a ‘social life’ so to speak anyway haha!
But, its important to have a work-life balance. Keeping friends and still going out for drinks, or meals, or events with them and your family is really important.
My colleagues and I do a lot of things too, go for food after work, or to the pub for lunch sometimes..and we do events like paint balling too which is great fun! So, I don’t think it affects it in a negative way, if anything, it helps you meet more people and do more!! Especially at conferences and seminars!!!
