Its great – engineering is such a broad term, and while tissue engineering is a fairly recent field of work, it still comes under that.
Its an exciting field for sure, and people are always surprised when I say I grow living 3D models of the roof of the mouth – and the pictures that I can get to show my work are brilliant.
You get to learn a load of different skills. It depends what kind of engineer you are of course, but for me, I learnt how to grow, make and maintain the models, how to infect them, how to analyse them.. so theres a lot of cell work, but then a lot of other work that goes behind it – reading about different cells (so you learn a lot about these too, and what work other people have done previously). for this kind of engineering, you don’t have to be top of the class for maths either, which is a bonus for me!! 😀
I think it feel pretty great to be an engineer. It’s a job that is never the same each day and I love solving problems.
I find it interesting when you tell people you’re an engineer as it is so broad. Sometimes people have very specific ideas about what engineers do. One time someone thought being an engineer meant that I was a car mechanic.
