My favourite material is carbon fibre. It is super light and super resistant. Depends on how you put it together you can even achieve spring properties, so you will get rebound when jumping on it.
How cool is that?
I grow my cells on fibres made by electrospinning, this is where you take a polymer solution and apply a really high voltage to it. The polymer solution becomes charged and accelerated towards a negative source creating fibres. I mainly do this using polycaprolactone and polylactic acid which are both biodegradable and can be implanted into people without any bad reactions.
I enjoy the most programming and studying how the muscles move on my computer. In this sense, i don’t work with materials, but with electrical signals and computers!
I don’t work with many materials, I use poly (methyl-methacrylate) which is just basically an acrylic (plastic). This is the material dentures (false teeth) are made of, and I use it in my studies..
I use living cells to make my 3D living tissue models, which are much more difficult to work with (they need lots of maintenance, feeding etc)
