That is a good question, and as a microbiologist I have very little knowledge about it!
All I know is that it’s a branch of physics looking at the fundamental theory of nature at small scales and low energies of atoms and subatomic particles..apparently so I read 😉
I know in the field of nanotechnology (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanotechnology) the quantum scale is becoming the norm. In diagnostic medical imaging there are things called quantum dots (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_dot) that are semiconductors (similar to computer chipsets made from silicon) that can attach to live cells and luminate on a photo detector. This shows the realtime movement of live cells within say a tumour which would be useful for treatment plants. As far as I know this technology is still in the research phase, but advancements are made everyday.
It is the field of physics that studies what’s going on around the smallest of scales, so atomic and sub-atomic scale.
Quantum of energy is a specific amount of energy, a ‘pack’.
