First of all your will need A-Levels usually a minimum of two sciences are requires and Physics and maths would really help.

Then there are different levels and different routes you can take. You can do a BEng at university or a HND at collage. For most more advanced level engineering jobs you will need either a BEng.

After your degree you can look to gain Chartered status to become a CEng, this involves on the job development. It might be easier to do a degree that gets you a masters (MEng) first as this will satisfy several of the requirement sfor chartered status.

I think Todd has hit on the nail. 🙂

Todd has explained it nicely, however, I would also comment that you don’t need to go through engineering educational routes necessarily.

I studied Biomedical Sciences, and from that point, there are routes into biomedical engineering. Which, isn’t ‘engineering’ in the sense of robotics, or physical/technical engineering, but in the biological sense it is still engineering. You’d still need scientific background – so chemistry, biology or physics, but it really depends on your course choice too.

You can have a degree or an apprenticeship or even HND or HNC 🙂
