A particle accelerator is kind of like a giant swingball which uses magnets instead of a piece of string. The particles in the accelerator are sped up using huge amounts of energy (kind of like when the swingball is hit with a racket) so that they go round faster and faster.

Now imagine you have two sets of particles – or two balls on the swingball – one going one way and one going the other. The accelerator will try to get them both going nearly the speed of light, before making them crash into each other.

This collision is what scientists study.
