I can’t really recommend any time in particular – any time is a good time. I started building things out of K’nex and Lego when I was in primary school, and have always enjoyed building things since then.

Really, if you like building things then you’ve already started. Or if you’ve ever looked at something and thought “I wonder how that works” then you’ve started too. And if you haven’t, then you could try to find something today to take apart and figure out how it works. I recommend something like a clicky pen or a pepper grinder (i.e something cheap that isn’t a disaster if you can’t put it back together!)

Any age – I got interested in Primary 6 (Year 6) when I built a meccano crane that was electronically controlled. If you like learning how things work and you’re creative and like building your own projects, you’re already an engineer!

If you mean for learning formally, like at university or college then you can start that as soon as you leave school – some places might even let you do work experience before you leave school so you can see if you enjoy it!
