A microchip is usually a tiny device with electronic circuits (so like this: http://tinyurl.com/q4xen3l)
They’re found in computers, smart phones, cars, fridges, credit cards & loads of other stuff, & will carry out some kind of job for you (e.g. in a car they might control your engine)

A newer type of microchip are ones that use fluids instead of electronics (like this: http://tinyurl.com/plp6hja). This is the type I make. These ones are really good to use for analysing cells, because cells can happily float around in them & won’t dry out 🙂
