It was a project at university, so the first reason was to get good grades.
It has a lot of real applications in the world too though. A 3D food printer would mean that Astronauts could take powdered food to space and have it printed into a nice meal, which might make a 2 year journey to Mars a little easier. Plus if we ever have a colony on Mars, they could print things that may not grow so well in Martian soil.
Here on Earth, a 3D food printer might just be the new microwave or the new toaster. Except it would be even better! You could maybe control it with an app, then you could have whatever food you like ready when you get home from school or work.
