I chose to study electronic engineering because I love to build/make things and I love being able to see them work so quickly – I can build a circuit and control it with code in a few hours! I moved into bioengineering because I wanted to use electronics to help people (and I love a good medical drama like Grey’s Anatomy so this way I can justify all the time I’ve spent watching them!)
I work in materials engineering because I really love to understand why materials behave the way they do. 3D printed materials are very interesting because they are made up of lots & lots of little layers, & this makes their properties really unique.
In my uni degree I did a research project on making smart windows (windows that can change colour- you might’ve seen some on a plane!), & it was that project that first got me interested in materials engineering.
I got into medical engineering 4.5 years ago wanting a change from working on industrial equipment because I like the idea of directly impacting the wellbeing of people
It was a pure chance that I happen to end up in this field. It is true that I wanted to work in healthcare, but I was not aware of biomedical imaging. But it feels that I was born to do this! But as general pointer, I would suggest, if you are in the stage of deciding,to understand what your interests are, what your strengths are and what makes you want it more. Even it is not a big thing for others, it might be THE thing for you.. then go have for it, fight the society if you have to (because I had to struggle a lot to come abroad for my research)!
