  As a mechanical engineer, we need to know how strong things are.

  My favourite experiment to imitate the hydraulic fracture that we create in the rock of oil and gas reservoirs – in the fish tank filled with set gelatine pumping colored double cream through a straw!
  
  Another one I like is ‘volcano’ with soda bicarbonate.
