My job really varies, I work in a small engineering company and have found that because of this i get to work over more stages and skillsets than i probably would at a big company. I havent actually worked at another company though, so this is just a thought.

My end goal in work is to deliver a working piece of equipment. So during the design phase i work with the lead engineer to help them come up with a solution. I don’t actually do the “hard sums” but can understand what they mean and then take these to our customer and make sure it is what they want and that it will fit in the ship!

when the equipment is being made, i spend time on site again helping the fabricators understand our drawings and how it all fits together! There are always problems and never seems to fit first time!

Installation and Commissioning are my favourite stages, this is when you actually get to see it in its final form! alot of hands on work with tools and getting dirty. There is also the super clean side too though where you sit with the software engineer to make sure the equipment does what it is supposed to do. Lots of tests and pushing buttons to check it!

While my work days can be similar, and show similar problems, they are never exactly the same and i find myself mostly applying lessons learned from previous projects!

Everything. I build things, I test them, I design them, I anayse them, I teach them, I write about them. Mostly high voltage, high frequency AC systems called high power radio frequency.

I lead multiple teams to build computer and software systems that are then used by scientists from around the world to prepare for and carry out amazing experiments that have never been done before.

I help decide what we are going to build and when. I make sure we have enough software engineers with the right skills to make the software. I meet with customers (scientists and engineers) to understand what the software we are building needs to do. I join in the design of the software and review the code of others. Although I don’t get to do it as often now I am a manager, I sometimes actually get to do some programming too!
