Hi @Lily I’m a software engineer. I make websites, write computer programs and apps for phones. Sometimes people doing similar jobs call themselves web developer or software developer or programmer.
Technically my job title is an electronic and electrical engineer, but I do a lot of mechanical and nuclear engineering as well. The more senior you get the more you have to cover as you have to lead teams of many different engineers.
I’m a mechanical engineer! it covers such a wide range of subjects and can be applied to loads of different areas.
I work with ships and then more specifically cable laying and offshore support vessels. During this i can find myself having to do sums to make sure something is strong enough, will stay in place, how it will react when weight is put on it! but also, electrical systems and the control systems in place!
I find that while each engineering field may be defined, there is alot of crossover between us and we have a brief understanding of things outside of our field, enough to understand what another type of engineer is doing 🙂
I’m a mechanical engineer!
But I basically learn to do whatever people need, so I’m currently building lots of radiation shields and also monitoring the cracks in our 1100 tonne concrete beams :O I talk to physicists and engineers to find out what they need. Sometimes it’s changes to their experiments and other times it’s whole new pieces of equipment. Then I talk to the simulations team and the analysist group to check whether my designs will work, then I get to help build and install the things I made!
