  • Work History:

    Before working in the energy industry, I did some advertising for Irn Bru while I was at University and worked in a restaurant while I was at School.

  • Current Job:

    I currently work in a team which fixes electrical things in power stations across the UK and in Germany

  • Employer:

    I work for an Energy company called RWE Generation which owns and operates power stations.

    I help keep Britain’s lights on by fixing power stations and making plans for a clean energy future in the UK

  • My Typical Day: I work in a team to fix today’s problems, try to predict tomorrow problems and also do some research on new technology

    Over the past 2 years, I’ve done more than 8 different jobs within the company. Some of the jobs I’ve done include working as an electrical engineer, a mechanical engineer, a power station operator, in commercial improvement and business strategy. So it’s hard to say what exactly is in my typical day!

    All jobs have a few common elements – here are two that I think are really important. Firstly, you work with other people all the time so it’s really important to be friendly and get to know your colleagues – it makes the job much easier! Secondly, it’s really useful to have a good understanding of ‘the bigger picture’ – knowing how your small task contributes to the wider purpose.

     

  • What I'd do with the money

    I’m excited to continue supporting local schools with STEM and engineering clubs. I would use the money to support schools which can’t afford the resources and improve engineering outreach in my local area.

    Hands on practical activities are a great way to get engaged with engineering – simple design and build tasks which can be really fun.

    Unfortunately all these things cost money and some groups can afford to spend more than others.

    I would like to support local organisations looking to develop STEM clubs or run activities and require both technical and financial support.

    • How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

      enthusiastic, logical & inquisitive

      What's the best thing you've done in your career?

      I launched my university research project into the atmosphere from a space base in Sweden, with support from the European Space Agency

      What did you want to be after you left school?

      I never really knew exactly – just that it was some sort of engineer!

      Were you ever in trouble at school?

      Once…I talked too loudly with a friend after finishing the Maths problem too fast.

      If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?

      An architect…or some sort of designer

      Who is your favourite singer or band?

      Ed Sheeran…but it changes every few weeks

      What's your favourite food?

      Haggis, neeps and tatties ;-)

      What is the most fun thing you've done?

      Earlier this year I worked for 3 months in Germany – as well as an interesting job, I got to travel and meet local people.
