Perhaps you would be better placed to answer that! How do you think we should engage with kids at an early age to encourage them to consider STEM careers?
I think the work of STEM ambassadors is really important – going into schools and running workshops and just talking about engineering (&STEM) so kids understand what it means, is really important.
I think this event is also a great way to have a conversation and answer the questions that you want to ask!
I think the most important thing is to show kids what STEM jobs even exist, and that they can be good options. Publicity and outreach are the only way the world can see what interesting things there are to do in a STEM job.
I think it’s our job as engineers to firstly change the misconceptions about what an engineer does and doesn’t, then it’s up to the engineering firms to show that it’s a very well paid career with good opportunities, and then it’s up to the education system to give the young people the skills they’ll need and work with industry to keep these relevant.
