Sure! A DC brushless electric motor is actually just a special type of AC motor. DC brushless motors are powered by a square wave type signal instead of a purely sinusoidal waveform. You need a special controller to power a DC brushless motor compared to a DC brushed motor, but there is no real reason why you couldn’t use it. DC brushless motors are can be a lot more efficient than DC brushed motors so my guess is that a lot of the world solar challenge cars probably use DC brushless motors already.
