When I was younger I wanted to be Space Scientist because I thought space was a really exciting area of development. As I grew up I realised that we need to save the planet we live on and one of the main ways we can do this is by creating energy more sustainably. That’s when I decided that I wanted to be a fusion engineer and make a difference on the earth.
As a side note, fusion happens constantly on the Sun, so maybe there is an aspect of me who is a Space Scientist after all!

I like being a mechanical engineer, it’s one of the broadest disciplines. I have to work with other types of engineers all the time so I get to learn more about electrical and software engineering then.

I am lucky that my work is very diverse, and I get to be different types of engineer depending on the project. “Cybernetics” is a very broad field. I studied as an electrical and electronics engineer at university, but my current day to day work is that of a Software Engineer. After I have finished my current project, I could be working more like a Control Systems Engineer, VR Engineer, or Systems Integration Engineer depending on what the project needs.

I don’t think I would want to work on anything that wasn’t fusion, at least until we get it working perfectly, maybe after that I will retire…
If I did a different degree, I might have chosen mechanical engineering as I have found I really want to be good at designing things and solving problems, but there were lots of cool things about my physics degree too! 😀
Engineers don’t get to learn so much about stars and space as scientists do, and stars are cool…!

I’ve done 3 different engineering jobs so far and if i’m honest, every job shared a lot of common themes. The way I approached problems and solved them. The biggest difference was just what the problem was and what maths and knowledge I had to use to solve the problem. I enjoy fusion and am happy with my current choice.

Hmmm… I don’t think so. If I could choose all over again, I will still set my heart on being a mechanical engineer! However if I was not involved in Nuclear fusion, I may want to go to the Aerospace sector – but anyhow I would still be classed as a mechanical engineer!
Being a mechanical engineer is actually quite comprehensive in my opinion. I know peers that have the same “job role” as a mechanical engineer but they work in all sorts of industries (i.e. ranging from working in Formula 1 to working in the Food & Beverage sector!).
