Absolutely!…They helped to lay the groundwork for deeper thinking and also, many concepts learned during GCSE help to lay the scientific groundwork for more advanced concepts used in modern technology.
I studied in Greece so the system there was different to GCSEs, but I think that the Greek GCSE equivalent really helped me focus more on the subjects I was more interested in and allowed me to go deeper in them. For example, without my high school maths, I wouldn’t have been able to understand the maths classes at uni!
The vastness of the GCSE syllabus is the key. As you go further in your career you will become more and more specialised, which can in turn make you blinkered to other ways of thinking/interpreting and understanding how other people can think/interpret.
I now work in a multi discipline team with colleagues from different countries. If I hadn’t done a language at GCSE I would not have understood that sometime words/phrases don’t translate that well and that though I might say one thing my colleagues may not understand it the same way due to translation. This has allowed me to improve my communication with all people thus helping me to succeed.
I also took Art at GCSE which has helped me use things like optical illusions and form to better improve the look and feel of the products I design.
So in short yes I do think GCSE’s helped me succeed
