• Question: What are your views on Brexit?

      I think it is a mistake.

      Brexit has affected a lot what we do: we already have reduced applications from people from all over the world wanting to come and work with us (we are losing on good scientists and engineers!), the collaborations we have (which are essential to do research) are in danger and a lot of the funding we receive from the European commission is also in danger to stop.

      A very divisive question! I have a lot of personal, political and social views on why I think it is a bad thing, but I think I should keep the answer in the context of how it might affect our work.

      Hopefully it shouldn’t affect collaborative work as a lot of communication can be done remotely, but there is a lot of concern about how funding will work after the UK leaves the EU, and how easy it will be for researchers and students to travel to other universities. We could lose out on a lot of great scientists and engineers coming to work in the UK, people like Tonia and Edgars for example! I hope it won’t be too bad, but the biggest problem right now is the uncertainty, no one knows what is going to happen, so people are more reluctant to commit to UK-EU projects compared to before the vote.

      Brexit argument is silly, especially when people eventually realized that they do not want to leave EU.
      –
      It already affected my university. I was the last lucky student to get a scholarship, but my department was denied scholarships for the next year both for UK and EU students.

      I like to keep my political opinions to myself, so i’d be answering this question from a societal perspective.
      I think with the vote to leave the EU it shows we much rather be in hot water and have something to talk about, as supposed to there being peace and calm with very little negativity in the air.
      You see often times in life when we choose a kind of behaviour/make certain kinds of decisions-you have to deal with the associated consequences, ‘we’ as a nation have chosen to leave the EU umbrella so be it as it may, ‘we’ are all going to have to deal with the associated consequences irrespective of how good or bad they turn out to be.

      I would like it to be over so that the country and industry can get on with things. the uncertainty is causing untold problems.
