• Question: What qualifications do you need to become an engineer?

      If you want to become a trained engineer, you need to study for an undergraduate degree at university. Then you can take exams to become chartered engineer or not. I continued to study at university and did postgraduate degrees as well.

      I have a masters in engineering and before that I got A-levels and GCSE’s

      That really depends on the type of engineer you mean, some might need apprenticeships or similar practical qualifications, but some really need a degree or higher, like a lot of the engineers here have.

      You can become an engineer by doing apprenticeship or by studying Bachelor degree in university.
      –
      However, there are some fields were you are not obliged to have a degree. In computer sciences and electrical engineering it could be enough if you learn everything by yourself at home and then find a job or make a company straight away.

      In essence, the experience is what matters and not the degree. It is much easier to get the experience trough university, however it is not the only way.

      There are different routes now.
      How I did it was doing my GCSEs, A-levels and then a university degree in engineering.
      You can also do an apprenticeship with a company and they may ask you do some studying along side (a work as you learn situation).

    Instead of studying for a degree, you can also complete an apprenticeship and gain a qualification called an HNC if you’d prefer not to go to University. There are a couple of options depending on what you’re interested in!
