• Question: why did you become an engineer

      Initially, I only knew that I liked working with computers and I was good at math. Now, my work involves research for novel solutions to problems that can transform society.
      This is very exciting and fulfilling to me.

      It was what the cool kids were going into when I was in 6th form. That’s not even a lie.
      I did maths, further maths, physics and biology for A Levels and the people in my classes just assumed I would be doing engineering because of my choices and started asking me where I was applying to do engineering. I had no clue back then but I started looking it up and it sounds cool, it meant that I can keep learning maths, physics and biology. Don’t judge me…

      In the last year of high school I wanted to be a surgeon, but I could not apply to medical school. I did not know what I want to do after school. I was fairly good at mathematics and biology, so it seemed interesting to study medical engineering. This way I could study both engineering and some basic biology and anatomy and hopefully in the future work in the hospital.

      I was good at maths and science when I was at school so my dad got me to talk to the engineers who worked where he did. At this point I new engineering was for me.

      When we were choosing our PhD projects one of the biochemical engineering ones looked really cool, and was related to the stuff I was interested in anyway while I was studying science, so now I do both 🙂
