Steve Bowes-Phipps answered on 24 Nov 2021:
I go and speak to clients to listen to what their concerns/issues are with their technology and then suggest ways in which we may help them (pre-sales)
I run projects from inception to closure, managing all the team, what we are delivering in terms of our outputs and ensuring that the client relationship goes smoothly (post-sales)
I provide high value consultancy on technology issues
I write and present on topics around technology and digital infrastructures to worldwide audiences
I visit Data Centres and review their technology, the physical security of the facilities and assess whether they are managed and operated in the best way – I do this worldwide for various clients
I write ‘opinion pieces’ that could be published on a blog, in a journal, or on LinkedIn. My opinions will be about how technology is used, about how to attract more diverse talent (i.e. people) into the industry, and improve environmental sustainability of data centres
I ‘network’ with fellow technologists to build personal relationships and win more business
I am a member of various committees and an Advisory Board

I assist in a research project called CEDaCI. So, I read and write a lot, disassemble loads of servers and create an inventory database of the components. Last year I worked on the design of a sustainable server. I also have to present CEDaCI work at conferences, travel to exhibitions and try to make project connections with people in the data centre industry. Sometimes, I help design promotional materials and this year I was helping to create a video to promote the project. It’s a busy job, but no day is the same, so it’s fun!

Femi Olushola answered on 29 Nov 2021:
Over my years of experience, I have completed various projects and done a variety of things. Presently, I design, review, and enhance/upgrade electrical power systems. This is done in my present company, VIRTUS; a data centre company. Data centres require a lot of electrical power, cooling, and security. I am part of the design team building new data centres and upgrading existing ones.

I am a a maintenance engineer responsible for the management of maintenance works on our data centres when other companies attend to work on specific equipment that is essential to run the data centre. I also complete my own essential works and checks to ensure the data centre is running ok.
I am also a site manager and oversee the installation process of the building of the new data centres. This will include health and safety, management and installation works for my company and sub contractors

I use spreadsheets to see what equipment is old and needs to be replaced to keep the computer servers running. I organise meetings with people from different parts of our company to plan the replacement so that we don’t have to turn off the servers.

My day to day job includes working on the new projects we are working to win the contracts for, this involves working alongside the design team and sales team. Once we have won the contract we get the projects awarded, which means i then need to set up the project for health and safety, and fill it with a Keysource site team. I then go an inspect the work that is being completed to ensure it looks good and they are on Programme, whilst ensuring the customer is happy throughout.
