  Give students lots of “lab” time to do projects; learn by experimenting in a safe environment is the best way to demonstrate how engineering tools can be used, and how basic principles and theories are applied.

I agree with Yip! Encourage making and building – it develops curiosity and problem solving skills. Also, meeting engineers and hearing about their jobs is always helpful.
