I love to work with the scanning electron microscope (as you might see from my profile) – I am fascinated with the world of the very small, and trying to understand how the micro-sized structure of materials affects it’s every-day properties.
For example, how does paint interact with light? In a microscope you can see that paint is pretty much diamond dust glued to the wall! The diamonds are actually titanium dioxide (also used in sunscreen) which is actually more brilliant than diamond…
So my vote is the microscope, in particular the type that uses beams of electrons rather than light.

The best machine? Probably is the flexible manufacturing system that I used to “play” with in the manufacturing system lab when I was in university.
