The funnest times are when you are will like-minded people all working on a project together – when a good team exists, all work is fun, and even disasters can be memorable. It almost seems that the worse the event was at the time, the better the memories!
I once had to work with a friend on a platinum mine in SOuth Africa where we had to take a sample every 4 hours for a week, and for safety reasons we needed to be two people – it was weird trying to get sleep, trying to eat, and trying to analyse the sample on this weird 4-hour cycle. After a week I think we become a bit odd!
I also love it when we build a new plant (what we call a ‘factory’) – it is a real buzz when there are perhaps 100 people all working and the foundations go down and the beams go up and the ‘thing’ starts to take shape.
The most fin I had was travelling to Brazil to work on a project there. i was only there for 10 days but they had Oktoberfest and a parade and lost of stuff going on. It was great to hang out with the Brazilian engineers, and even go to a wedding!
Working with them was great fun. Finding out their views on the design and what challenges they face that we don’t in London. Like access to some materials. You can’t buy plastic P-clips in Brazil. Who knew?
