Of this century, I think Twitter. It sounds a bit rubbish but seeing how the green revolution in Iran was shared with the world, how its used to spread hope after tragedies, and memes about cats obviously, I think the impact of twitter is still being felt. Connecting people all over the world and allowing you to cyber stalk your favourite celebrities.
Wow, hard one. Time is usually the best test… but I’d have to go with a combo of the above (cheap, trick I know)… I’d say the smart phone – just think – we can face-time someone on the other side of the world, access the world’s biggest library, see a high-res map of the whole world, watch live sports, movies or music videos, we can record and edit audio and video, broadcast our most pointless thoughts to billions people – and even use it as a make-up mirror.
There’s an ad for a store called Radio Shack that really drives the point home – (radio shack is the American version of Maplins) – every single thing in the ad is now incorporated into the typical phone – here it is, from the year I finished school: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steve-cichon/radio-shack-ad_b_4612973.html
Of course this is really not a single invention, but really, most inventions are like that – weather it’s the steam engine or the light bulb, it took a lot of steps to happen, a lot of clever people who decided to do something cool, rather than watch another episode of iCarly.
