The most efficient machinery I have designed is actually a project I am currently working on. The way our machines work is that a camera looks at a background, whilst products like nuts fall in front of the background. The ‘good’ product ‘disappears’ in front of the backgrounds the camera doesn’t see it, the machine can then eject the ‘bad’ product. Our new system uses LED lights to light up the background, better showing the bad product. Previously the background was just plain black. The camera uses new software to send a signal to the air ejectors that knock bad product out of the stream. The better the machine can do this the less good product is lost and the less bad product gets into the good product stream.
We are currently validating the design, we have built a prototype and our validation engineers are testing it. If it all works well, we will upgrade a machine at a customer site and see how it works there. If that all goes well we will release the design to production.
