It’s pretty challenging. It requires a good understanding of every stage of designing, making and testing printed electronics as well as the theory behind solar cells, which is why I needed a doctorate in engineering with relevant skills to get this job. As well as that there are lots of unexpected challenges that come up at various points during the projects which can require the project plan to be completely changed.

My job has moments of being challenging, moments of being easy. It all depends on exactly what tasks I am doing and how easy or difficult I find them. And what the situation I am working in is (e.g. if I am working within particular technical or commercial restraints for the project).

But as long as you find what you do interesting, then you can get through the hard bits and get a great sense of achievement. I enjoy being challenged now and again and think I would find my job boring if it was easy all of the time!

It varies, but it is generally quite challenging! Some tasks are pretty easy, but other tasks I can get stuck on for a while. I always make sure I ask questions and ask for help when I need it though.

I would say it is pretty challenging. As a Future Technologies Engineer, you need to come up with ideas/projects that no one did before.

I think different jobs would be hard for different people. For example, I did an internship in a manufacturing company, doing very repetitive activities, like puting a certain metalic piece into a machine 1000 times, and I found that extremely hard – to stay focused and not make a mistake. So I think that being an engineer is as hard as any other job and it just depends on your skills and interests, if you find it more or less hard.
In general engineering is a challenging job, since by definition your work is about solving problems, and in research it is about solving problems that have not been solved before. However, that it is challenging for me does not mean that it is hard – it just means that your job is about thinking, being creative and coming up with new ideas to solve a problem. For me that it is challenging makes it interesting, and I personally would find it very hard to do a repetitive job for example.
