It’s great! Every day is interesting and fun, and I get to solve lots of problems. I love coming up with ideas and being creative so it suits me really well. It’s also great to know I can help make a difference in the world through engineering.
Being an engineer is creative, interesting and fun. There are tonnes of different opportunities to use science and maths principals to solve a whole range of problems and design and make all of the technology that we use. It’s also nice to have a job where you are really in demmand because there are not enough engineers around. Also the pay is pretty good. Personally, it allows me to use my skills to turn some of my crazy (and some not so crazy) ideas into real things that can help takle problems like climate change and change peoples lives.
Being an engineer is very varied, you can have different tasks to do each day. There are lots of different types of engineer, and types of engineering job, so you can focus on the parts of engineering which appeal most to you. For example if you love being creative you can design machines or structures (Design Engineering). If you find electronics fascinating you can create electronic circuits for machines like cars (Electronic Engineering). If you enjoy learning about how things work together, like the different parts and systems in an aeroplane, then you can focus on that (Systems Engineering). And these are only a few examples! I’m a Mechanical Engineer, but I love to solve problems. So I mostly work with machines or power stations and work out how to make them function even better (such as by changing their maintenance schedules).
Being an engineer is challenging but fun. It is really interesting to always be solving different problems, it never gets boring and I continue to learn new things every day.
