Because I’m doing a doctorate, and it’s one project that I deal with and that’s mine, there are loads of times that I have to do things on my own, but I still have to communicate with other people for the things that I need to be done, or with my supervisors. I also have to present my work to the research board inside the company so they know how their money is being spent 🙂 I also get to go to conferences where I can talk about my project.
As a PhD student, I am the only person that works on my project, but no, I don’t think that means I work alone. There are many aspects of a PhD that mean you need to do it yourself (and there are days I really like to have the me time), but you have help around you in the form of other PhD students doing similar things, your supervisor who is there to guide you and others in the office that you happen to be in. I’m lucky, because in my office I have people doing things really similar to me but also really different. Together we make a good team of support and can talk about each other’s projects and give a slightly different perspective. You’re never really totally alone. 🙂
