Being presented with a problem and not having any idea how to solve it! That was really difficult for me because it made me feel like I was really stupid. I had to find a way to break down the problem and think about it from different perspectives to come up with a solution. I spoke to people in my team and I learned new skills to be able to do it. I have now solved that “small” problem…it’s taken me about a year!

Mentoring a summer placement student and guiding and helping a colleague on a project that we both work on, whilst trying to keep up with the work i am doing.

It is quite hard balancing the time spent, trying to basically teach someone they same thing you’re working on, whilst working on my own parts of the projects, which I have never worked on before.
A lot of times, I was stuck on solving parts of the problem, so I’d be trying to take a step back, re-evaluate the problem and information I had, and asking people in my team lots of questions.
It’s really challenging, because it shows me how much I really do know certain concepts, how well I can break it down and how well I do at explaining and teaching.

Definitely being a mentor to someone, or even their first point of contact for help has developed my skills in how to deal with my time, and explaining what I have learnt myself.
