Question: Have you engineered anything from the military?

I haven’t personally no I know people that have, it’s an interesting field. There are lots of complicated things to think about surrounding where your design ends up. You could make something thinking it will be used (in theory) only to defend people, but often groups or nations will buy the design and use it in ways that you disagree with. Difficult.
