Do you know I wish I knew the answer to that. I went to a Big Bang Fair recently and overhead a mother saying to her daughter “oh no darling you don’t want to do engineering, come and see what else you can do”….which I thought was crazy and wanted to go over and have a word! I think parents can often guide children into careers that were popular when they were young but the world is changing and the face of engineering is very different to what it used to be. So that’s what I do to encourage more girls into engineering – I try to spread the facts and spread the fun 🙂
Like Jo, I wish I knew. It is such a fantastic industry for young girls, there are unlimited possibilities and now is the time to get into it!! I see being a woman in this industry being a massive advantage, I have had no problems in career progression and the majority of professionals have been more than accepting and even excited. People are always asking me how I got into engineering and how I find it and what degree I did and how university was. It’s always a conversation starter so good for meetings with clients etc. I take part in projects when I can, just to spread the word. The more girls learn at a young age that engineering is a possibility, hopefully more girls take up engineering jobs or degrees
